Bought and sold…

Over 600,000 Facebook users have taken part in a psychological experiment organised by the social media company, without their knowledge. Facebook altered the tone of the users’ news feed to highlight either positive or negative posts from their friends, which were seen on their news feed. They then monitored the users’ response, to see whether their friends’ attitude had an impact on their own. “The results show emotional contagion,” wrote a team of Facebook scientists…

Facebook is a for profit company. The entire reason they provide the website, the software, down to the advertisements is to make money. There shouldn’t be any misunderstanding in this. Whatever they can leverage to that end they’ll do, just as supermarkets do when they offer these “membership” or “frequent buyer/shopper” cards. It’s all to sell to consumers.

It’s about shaping the consumer into an automaton. To study their habits and reshape them to drive more consumption. Facebook provides the platform to put closet narcissists front and center, promote sycophants, and indulge the maudlin.

Facebook is a resource of information which people willingly provide. The measure of that information is staggering, and likely due in large part to the obliviousness of its subscribers. If this recent news is any indicator it should be taken a confirmation that Facebook, as in most other social media websites, is only there to commodify the consumer. More and more, people aren’t human. They’re automatons to be measured and used.

About elmoshangnaster

The name's a dodge simply because 1) on the internet I can be whomever I choose, and 2) I'm just paranoid enough to keep scoundrels and government out of my business and don't care to sort 'em out from the decent folk. My blog, my opinions. Don't like 'em? Sure, kindly tell me about your far-fetched, idiotic beliefs...kindly. In the end we'll neither of us change the others mind, but I will take the time to read your arguments if they're thought out in a rational fashion and not full of hyperbole. I'm a Christian human being. It's not a flavor or color preference, it's who and what I am. Don't like it? The above considerations apply. I'm not about to waste anyone's time or mine shoving Christianity down their gullet if they demonstrate even the least resistance. When someone's ready to hear I'm only too glad to share. The Gravatar? It's Jenny Lake in the Tetons near Jackson, WY. If God had a house that's where it would be.
